State senator: Austin officials begin process of bringing relief to area
Published Saturday, June 20, 2009
AUSTIN State Sen. Dan Sparks, DFL-Austin, is adding another level of assistance available to Austin-area residents impacted by Wednesday’s tornado.
Sparks said in a news release sent out Friday he has been speaking with local officials and has already begun the process of working to bring relief to those in need.
“I spent most of Thursday helping our neighbors clean up their yards and homes,” Sparks said. “I’ve seen first-hand all of the devastation people are facing right now, and I know from the past disasters this area has faced that people have a lot of questions after something like this happens. If anyone is facing challenges or has questions, I encourage them to contact me so I may help them through the disaster relief process.”
He said he spoke with several local leaders yesterday and is waiting for them to provide a total damage estimate. Once that number is available, he will begin work at the state level to secure disaster aid. That aid may not be available until the Legislature reconvenes in 2010, but the preliminary work of securing support can begin immediately.
“This area has seen its fair share of challenges in the past,” Sparks said. “I have no doubt that, by working together, we will rebound as a stronger community.”
Anyone with questions may contact Sparks in Austin at (507) 438-2898 or sen.dan.sparks@senate.mn.
