Bagley, Leonard named to Northwestern dean’s list

Rebecca Bagley and Amanda Leonard, both of Albert Lea, were named to the spring 2009 semester dean’s list at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa.

Bagley earned collegiate scholar distinction for having a semester grade-point average of 3.75 or better. She is a junior majoring in psychology.

Leonard earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. She is a senior majoring in psychology and history.

Area students named to SDSU dean’s list

The following area students were named to the dean’s list for academic excellence during the spring 2009 semester at South Dakota State University in Brookings. To be included, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or better. Students with an asterisk (*) earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

The following area students were included.

From the College of Arts and Science: Corey A. Berggren of Albert Lea, Ellen Ann Hansen* of Glenville and Allison Paige Anderson* of New Richland.

From the College of Agricultural and Biological Sciences: Jordan Elizabeth Claussen* of Glenville and Robert Guy Geesman* of Wells.

From the College of Engineering: Timothy Michael Rysavy of Ellendale and Kevin John Lynne of Hartland.

From the College of Family and Consumer Sciences: Corey Scott Rahn* of Albert Lea.

From the College of Pharmacy: Kristin Marie Wulff of Albert Lea.

Kelly Tomschin

Kelly Tomschin awarded scholarship

The AgStar Fund for Rural America announced that it has awarded Kelly Tomschin, a 2009 Alden-Conger High School graduate, a $1,000 educational scholarship.

Every year, the AgStar Fund for Rural America, a corporate giving program of AgStar Financial Services, awards $20,000 in scholarships to 20 graduating seniors within AgStar’s Minnesota and Wisconsin territory. Applications are received from high school seniors who plan to attend colleges, universities and technical schools to pursue careers in agriculture or related fields. Recipients of the award are selected based on their academic interest, leadership characteristics, agricultural background and community involvement.

Tomschin plans to attend Rochester Community and Technical College and study horticulture technology-floriculture. She is the daughter of Randy and Sandra Tomschin of Alden.

Peggy Gebhardt

Peggy Kortz Gebhardt earns master’s degree

Peggy Kortz Gebhardt was awarded her master of science in nursing degree from Saint Francis Medical Center College of Nursing May 16.

She graduated with distinction.

She is the daughter of Jerry and Bennie Kortz of Albert Lea.

Kortz Gebhardt has been hired by Dr. Ron Bush as an advance practice nurse to work in his clinic, Vein Associates.

Melissa Richards

Melissa Richards awarded medical degree

Melissa (Lonning) Richards received her medical degree from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences on May 9 at Grand Forks. She is a 2000 graduate of New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva High School and a 2004 graduate of Winona State University with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology.

Richards will be completing a four-year residency at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education Program in Rochester in the area of obstetrics and gynecology. She is married to Paul Richards. They will be making their home at 2630 Third Place NE, Rochester.

Those attending the graduation were: Paul Richards; grandparents Lloyd and Elenore Mellgren of Fort Ripley and Roger and Marge Lonning of Albert Lea; parents Steve and Cheryl Lonning of Geneva and Larry and Mary Richards of Ellendale; sisters Nicole Lonning of Buffalo and Krystle Lonning of Winona; brothers- and sisters-in-law: Gary, Joan and Miranda Richards of Ellendale, Sharon, Bob, Evan and Wyatt Lucas of Minnetrista, Taff, Jean, Cassidy and Laura Worrell of Geneva; uncles and aunts: Bruce, Patty and Devan Mellgren of Cologne and Kathy O’Connor of Zumbrota; and friends Heather Wayne and Kelly Knaus of Minneapolis.

Bobby Geesman

Bobby Geesman awarded scholarship at SDSU

Bobby Geesman of Alden was awarded the Harley F. and Adele M. Taylor Scholarship in agricultural economics/ ag business for the 2009-10 school year at South Dakota State University.

Geesman, the son of Gary and Angie Geesman, is majoring in ag business at SDSU.

Harley Taylor, a native of the Northville, S.D., area, graduated from SDSU in 1954 with a bachelor of science degree in agricultural economics. He had a successful career in the farm implement business and also in farming and ranching near Aberdeen. He is now retired in Rapid City and Aberdeen.

He and his late wife, Adele, had four daughters and 12 grandchildren.

Megan Borchert on NDSU dean’s list

Megan L. Borchert of Ellendale was named to the spring 2009 dean’s list at North Dakota State University in Fargo. To be included, a student must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or better.

Borchert is majoring in sport and recreation studies.
