Alden man arrested in connection with high-speed pursuit

Published Saturday, June 27, 2009

The man who allegedly led authorities on a high-speed chase last weekend from Worth County into Freeborn County south of Twin Lakes is in the Freeborn County jail awaiting extradition to Iowa.

Worth County Chief Deputy Dan Fank said an arrest warrant has been issued in Worth County for Christopher Lloyd VanRyswyk, 19, of Alden.

VanRyswyk is in the Freeborn County jail on an apprehension and detention order put out by a Minnesota Department of Corrections probation officer. He will be in the county until July 7 for a hearing regarding a probation violation, according to Freeborn County authorities.

Fank said that on June 20 he was on routine patrol when he found a motorcycle in the ditch by Diamond Jo Casino. He turned his patrol car around and VanRyswyk reportedly took off on the motorcycle at a high rate of speed.

“I was doing right at 100, and he was leaving me in the dirt,” Fank said.

The chief deputy followed the man north to State Line Road and ended up losing him northbound on 720th Avenue, which is east of Emmons, going into Twin Lakes, he said.

With the help of the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office and other tips, authorities located VanRyswyk later in the week and interviewed him.

Fank said VanRyswyk admitted to the act.

He is expected to be charged with eluding authorities, which is an aggravated misdemeanor, Fank said. In Iowa this charge is one step lower than a felony.

According to the Minnesota Department of Corrections Web site, VanRyswyk was on supervised release after a 2005 conviction on a first-degree controlled substance offense to manufacture and produce methamphetamine.

He was last released from a law enforcement facility in November of 2008.

His supervision expiration date was September of 2010.
