50 years ago — 1959
The Albert Lea Junior Legion baseball team lost their fourth straight game with a 4-1 loss to Mason City. Losing pitcher Dick Oliphant had 14 strikeouts. Gary Herman batted in Albert Lea’s run with a double.
The Wells Junior Leagion baseball team defeated New Richland 11-2. Winning pitcher Mark Kuechenmeister pitched a three-hitter. Danny Roberts and Ron Feist each had two hits for Wells.
The Glenville Junior Legion team lost to Hayfield 6-5. Doug Cipra and Butch Steene each had two hits for Glenville.
The Albert Lea Packers defeated Austin 10-6 in a Southern Minnesota League baseball game. Paul Flores hit two home runs and had five RBIs for Albert Lea.
25 years ago — 1984
Winners in the Albert Lea Singles Tournament included: Men’s “A” Division — Bruce Westrum (first), Rod Westrum (second), Bob Nothwehr (third); Men’s “B” Division — Mike Petersen (first), Jim Burns (second), Jerry Bibus (third); Women’s Division — Jeri Domes (first), Carolyn Bang (second), Tracy Larson (third).
Kent Hrbek had four hits including one triple and two doubles for the Minnesota Twins in their 8-2 win over the Cleveland Indians. Gary Gaetti had two doubles and drove in three runs for the Twins.
10 years ago — 1999
Jeff Schulz, pitcher and shortstop for ALHS, was named the Albert Lea Tribune 1999 All-Area Baseball Player of the Year and Neil Pierce of Alden-Conger was named the Albert Lea Tribune Baseball Coach of the Year. Players named to the team were Luke Hammer of Albert Lea, Ryan Barnick, Sam Hintz, Chad Mattson, Josh Sorensen and Vinnie VanEnglenburg from Alden-Conger, Adam Grunzke and Dominic Schultz from United South Central, Ben Dagestad, Josh Delger, Derek Lene and Bob Sletten from Glenville-Emmons, Justin Berg, Nick Budach, Cheston Field, Joe Moon and Josh Otto from New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva.
The Albert Lea 15-year-old baseball team improved to 9-0 for the season with an 11-1 victory over Austin. Jay Link was the winning pitcher. Bryan Shelangoski was 3-for-3 with two doubles and five RBIs.
