H1N1 vaccine arrives at Freeborn County Public Health

Published Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Freeborn County Public Health will administer its first round of H1N1 vaccine next week for a targeted group of people.

Freeborn County Public Health Director Lois Ahern said the targeted group includes pregnant women, people who live with or provide care for infants under the age of 6 months, children ages 6 months through age 4, and adolescents age 5 to 18 who have a medical condition that would put them at a higher risk. This corresponds with the guidelines of the Minnesota Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, she noted.

“We feel we can administer a lot of immunizations next week, but we have to target it,” Ahern said. “Eventually there will be enough H1N1 vaccine for anyone who wants it, but for the time being it will be for these groups.”

She said the Public Health Department has about 500 doses of the vaccine — made up of both the mist and injectable version — and people will be screened to determine which type they are eligible for.

Vaccines will be administered from 1 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 10 and from 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 14 at the Fairlane Building at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. People are encouraged to enter through the Bridge Avenue entrance.

Ahern said there is no cost required and people do not need to make appointments.
