Man dies after trench collapses

Published Monday, November 9, 2009

— A 79-year-old man died Saturday after a trench he was working in collapsed in rural Joice, Iowa.

According to a Worth County Sheriff’s Office report, when authorities arrived they found that the man had been working on a drainage tile in his bean field when the trench that he had dug collapsed, trapping him.

It was unknown how long the man had been trapped under the collapse, the release states. Joice and Hanlontown Rescue worked to free the man, and after he was freed he was found to be deceased at the scene.

The name of the man is not being released pending notification of family.

The Worth County Sheriff’s Office along with Joice Rescue, Hanlontown Rescue, Fertile Rescue, Lake Mills Ambulance, Iowa State Patrol and Mercy Life Flight responded to the call.
