Law enforcement officers urge people to drive with care over holiday weekend
Published Wednesday, November 18, 2009
Albert Lea and Freeborn County law enforcement officers are encouraging motorists to travel safely during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. During 2006-08, 19 motorists were killed during the holiday weekend (Wednesday through Sunday) across the state.
Law enforcement cites seat belt use and impaired driving as major concerns for Thanksgiving travelers. Of the 19 Thanksgiving-period deaths (2006-08), alcohol-related crashes accounted for 10 of the deaths. Of the 19 motorists killed, eight were unbelted. During that same time period, 2,232 motorists were arrested for DWI. The 2008 holiday weekend captured four DWI arrests within Freeborn County.
“Every year Thanksgiving travel turns tragic — resulting in empty chairs around the dinner table,” said Albert Lea Police Lt. J.D. Carlson. “Enforcing seat belt use and arresting DWI offenders are just a few of the things we do to ensure everyone’s safety.”
Follow the traffic safety recipe to ensure safe Thanksgiving travel:
Buckle up before and after you gobble up.
Plan for enough travel time to avoid the urge to speed — the posted speed is the speed limit.
Pay attention. Thanksgiving is one of the busiest, highest-volume travel periods.
If you plan on drinking, plan for a safe and sober ride home.

Good communication! Rather than the usual "threat of the month" this article shows that law enforcement may actually care about people. Nice job!

But they are still government and you can't trust them. Just ask NoDFL and Warhog.

If only they were a private security force doing it for insane profits, then we could trust them.

Just think if you do something wrong and the police catch you they are not the ones to blame. Blame yourself you broke the law. Don't do anything wrong and you won't have to worry about getting caught or paying a fine.

I find it interesting that over half the fatal accidents were people wearing their seatbelts.

Wildbill, where are these numbers and how many of the people would have died anyways regardless.

lefty - From the article: "Of the 19 motorists killed, eight were unbelted."
Which means 11 of them (57.8%) WERE belted.

Over half of the people killed were belted.... That's because many crashes are so severe that it doesn't matter if you are belted or not. If you head on a semi at 70mph, you will lose.

Thank you scurvy, I did not see that. I agree with Knowledge.

alhs1975, I think it's time you tell us who you are and where you are employed as an educator. I think the taxpayers or tuition payers who pay your salary, would be very disappointed upon reviewing your comment posting history on this website. If you are indeed an educator, it appears that your agressive and insulting posts are being done at times when you are being paid by someone to educate. It will also give parents the opportunity to decide if they want their children around someone setting such a poor example (if that is who you educate). If I am paying your salary through my taxes, I would also like to have the ability to speak with your superiors about how you are spending your time on my dollar.
Thanks in advance.

anasgrammy..I think you are right it always goes this way from the original to a discussion on something different. We must be older and not as defensive as some of the younger ones.
