Mail scam reported

Published Wednesday, November 18, 2009

The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office is asking area residents to look out for a mail scam.

On Tuesday, a Freeborn County resident brought a letter and check they had received by mail to the Sheriff’s Office. The letter was said to have been from HSBC Bank in London, Ontario. It was the “final prize notification,” telling the recipients they had won $195,000.

The letter gave instructions on how to claim the money, and it included a check with instructions that the recipients needed to pay a $1,950 processing fee before they could claim their money.

All indications are that this is a scam, the Sheriff’s Office reports. Anyone receiving a mailing like this should use discretion before responding in any way to the senders.
