50 years ago — 1959
Letterwinners for the Albert Lea High School wrestling team for the 1959-1960 season included: Lewis Kennedy, second-place finisher at 135 pounds at last years state tournament, Jim Thompson, Karol Hoiseth, Allen Stolze, Bob Kennedy, Pete Fabry, Dave English, Jim Karlberg, Mark Hylbak and Jeff Brooke.
Named to the Gopher Conference All-Star Football Team were Brian Christensen, John Milton and Gordie Amundsen from Blooming Prairie, Verdel Humberg, Peter Johnson and Dennis Lieberg from Ellendale, Don Mosier and Roger Loken from New Richland.
Steve Kirkeide, Art Allis, Bruce Virnig, Steve Hart and Don Schultz from Wells High School were named to the Middle Eight All-Conference Football Team.
The Albert Lea High School basketball team lost its season opening game to Minneapolis Patrick Henry 50-46. Mel Northway led Patrick Henry with 29 points. Dave Olson and Gary Jacobsen with 15 points each and Dave Donovan with 10 points led the Tigers.
25 years ago — 1984
Named to the Big Nine All-Conference Football Team from Albert Lea were center Dave Deyak and nose guard Mike Mendenhall.
ALHS graduate Billy Ferrie, wrestling for the University of Nebraska, went 5-0 to win the 142 pound division at the Bison Open Tournament in Fargo, N.D.
Named to the Gopher Conference All-Conference Football Team were Jeff Foss from Glenville, Jay Crabtree from Ellendale-Geneva, Charlie Steidler and Mark Tollefson from New Richland-Hartland.
Lynette Vanek from Glenville, Julie Born from Ellendale-Geneva, Lisa Fox and Tracy Wagner from New Richland-Hartland were named to the Gopher Conference All-Conference Volleyball Team.
10 years ago — 1999
Emily Ulve and Sarah Kammerer were named co-captains for the 2000 year girls’ tennis team at ALHS.
ALHS graduates Will Bryant, Marcus Ludtke, Mike Westland and Steve Nolander all played with the 1999 St. Thomas University football team.
The 13th-ranked University of Minnesota football team defeated Iowa 23-7. The Gophers season record stood at 8-3 and their Big Ten record at 5-3.
