50 years ago — 1959

The Albert Lea High School wrestling team shutout Minneapolis Patrick Henry 56-0. Winning by falls for the Tigers were Karrol Hoiseth at 105 pounds, Roger Kittelson at 112 pounds, Tom Stowell at 120 pounds, Allen Stolze at 127 pounds, Bob Kennedy at 133 pounds, Mark Hylbak at 145 pounds, Jerry Hanson at 154 pounds, Bill Muesing at 165 pounds, Jeff Brooke at 175 pounds and Jim Thompson at heavyweight.

Named to the Big Nine All-Conference football team from ALHS were Jim Thompson, Dick Oliphant and Paul Moe. Receiving honorable mention were Roger Wangen, Tom Suthers, Dave Reynen, Jeff Brooke, Steve Claybourn and Dave Palmer.

Returning letterwinners for the Luther College basketball team included ALHS graduate Clay Lyon and Lake Mills High School graduate Loren Moen.

25 years ago — 1984

In its season opening basketball game, the ALHS girls’ basketball defeated Fairmont 52-45. Jennifer Gildner scored 14 points and Mary Mathews recorded 11 rebounds for Albert Lea.

Julie Madson scored 23 points and Lynette Vanek 17 for the Glenville girls basketball team in its 61-43 victory over Waterville-Elysian.

Emmons defeated the Glenville boys’ basketball team 62-50. Scoring leaders for Emmons were Darrin Shaw with 21 points, Jon Larson with 14 and Doug Huntley with 10. Steve Olson led Glenville with 13 points.

Kiester-Walters defeated Winnebago 84-19. Brenan Bauman scored 30 points, Jon Olson 16 and Paul Meyer 10 for K-W.

The Minnesota Gophers basketball team opened their season with a 75-71 win over Wisconsin-Green Bay. Tommy Davis scored 25 points for the Gophers.

10 years ago — 1999

ALHS sophomore Naomi Gregerson placed second in the 100-yard freestyle and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle events at the Class A State Girls’ Swimming and Diving meet.

Named to the All-Big Nine Conference soccer team from ALHS were Bill Jones, Jens Levison, Luke Behrends, Dan Ravenhorst and Paul Olsen.

The Albert Lea U-12 girls hockey team tied Faribault 4-4. Laura Hillman scored three goals and Sarah Jensen one for Albert Lea.
