Wolverines start late against Houston

Published Saturday, October 3, 2009

Glenville-Emmons has been a second-half team this season, unfortunately for the Wolverines they spotted Houston a 28-7 lead at halftime Friday in Houston.

Glenville-Emmons (2-3, 2-3 SEC) managed 455 yards of total offense against the Hurricanes (3-1, 3-1 SEC) but squandered opportunities in the red zone throughout the game. The Wolverines failed to come away with points four times inside the 20 and were handed a 48-26 loss.

"When you can't punch it in, you lose ball games," said Glenville-Emmons head coach Derek Nelson. "We gotta come out in the first half right away next week."

The first half had the makings of last year's 54-10 blowout win for Houston, but the Wolverines made it a game in the third quarter, exchanging scores with the Hurricanes throughout the quarter.

But Houston's Tye Carrier was too much for Glenville-Emmons, who played with out senior lineman Tanner Kalevig. Carrier scored five touchdowns, including an 82-yard kick return to open the second half.

"He was very quick," Nelson said. "He had a big line that was blowing holes open for him all night."

The Wolverines countered with their standout running back Michael Thofson. Thofson rushed for 198 yards but did not find the end zone.

Glenville-Emmons quarterback Zack Williamson threw two touchdowns to Tyler Woodside and ran for two touchdowns. Williamson finished 10-for-29 with 224 yards passing and one interception.

"We made some mistakes," Nelson said. "It's nothing to get down on. This loss is not going to set us back. We knew we were going against the giants."

The Wolverines face Spring Grove on the road next week.
