Book sale, fire station open house, breakfasts scheduled

The Albert Lea Friends of the Library will hold its semi-annual used book sale today, Friday and Saturday. The sale will be held in the city garage on Fountain Street.
Today, the Friends will accept book donations from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. today. Then a “members only” sale will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Memberships will be available for $5 at the sale.
On Friday, the sale will be for the public from 2 to 6 p.m. On Saturday morning, the remaining books will be available for $1 per bag from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
All proceeds from the sale help fund the Friends of the Library projects such as the recent author night with William Kent Krueger and many programs within the children’s library.
Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.
Friday, Oct. 9
• Grace Lutheran Church, 918 Garfield Ave., will hold its 33rd annual salad luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $6 per person. Hot barbecue sandwiches and many salads will be served.
• The Pat Waddick art show will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from noon to 4 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 10
• The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be open in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon.
• A craft sale featuring crafts from many local artists will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Oakland Town Hall. Items include quilts, table runners, charms, hand-crafted jewelry, pottery, memory bears, scrapbooking, scarves and more.
• The Pat Waddick art show will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• The Albert Lea Fire Department will hold its annual Fire Prevention Week open house from 1 to 3 p.m.
• The Hartland Legion Auxiliary will host a soup and pie supper from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Hartland Community Center.
• The Austin Area Solos and Singles will hold a dance from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. at the New Richland American Legion Club. The Zen Zen Band will play. Cost is $7 for members and $8 for nonmembers.
Sunday, Oct. 11
• The Albert Lea Masonic Lodge, 147 N. Broadway Ave., will hold an amaranth pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pancakes, eggs and sausage, orange juice and coffee will be served. Those attending are asked to bring a nonperishable item for the food shelf.
• A pancake breakfast to benefit the Good Samaritan Society of Albert Lea’s efforts to build a prayer garden will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at hte Albert Lea Moose Club. Denny Brue’s pancakes, granny egg bake, juice and coffee will be served. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children 5 and younger.
• The annual benefit luncheon, hosted by the St. John’s Lutheran Home Ladies Auxiliary, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the St. John’s chapel, 901 Luther Place. Scalloped potatoes and ham, salad, pickles, dinner roll and bars will be served. Cost is $6 per person. There will also be a drawing for a quilt, bird feeder and door prizes. Funds raised will benefit the St. John’s Lutheran Home resident gardening program.
• Zion Lutheran Church, 924 Bridge Ave., will hold Oktoberfest from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Brats, meatballs, sauerkraut, hot German potato salad, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, glazed carrots, cole slaw, bread, beverages and German chocolate cake will be served. Cost is $10 for adults, $3 for children ages 3 to 10 and children under 3 eat free.
