Editorial: ‘Ideas won’t go to jail’

Published Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Like freedom? Enjoy these quotations related to the First Amendment, which offers the rights of freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and freedom to petition the government.

“If any one amendment can be seen as the most important, I would pick the First. It opens the door to ensuring all other rights.” — Warren E. Burger, former U.S. chief justice, 1991

“I gave up watching television 25 years ago because I liked it so much even though I couldn’t remember what I had watched the day before and could see that if I went on as a viewer my life would become a blank.” — Garrison Keillor, author, broadcaster, 2007

“In those wretched countries where a man cannot call his tongue his own, he can scarce call anything his own.” — Benjamin Franklin, U.S. statesman, 1722

“The wonderful things about books is that they allow us to enter imaginatively into someone else’s life.” — Katherine Paterson, author, 1991

“Journalists have never been in more danger, nor have they ever been more important.” — Peter Arnett, journalist, author, 1993

“It is certainly no part of the practice of religion to compel others to the practice of religion.” — Tertullian, Christian author, c. 200 A.D.

“Books won’t stay banned. They won’t burn. Ideas won’t go to jail.” — Alfred Whitney Griswold, writer, educator, 1959

“While both religion and the media benefit from the First Amendment, church and press are, at best, uncomfortable allies.” — Judith Buddenbaum, journalism professor, Colorado State University.

It is not the newspaperman that ensures the right to free speech, it is not the preacher that ensures the freedom of religion, it is the soldier that fights for those rights and freedoms.

So my question is, where does the Trib come down on the attacks leveled by the Obama administration against Fox news? If you ask the tough questions then I guess you become a target for Obama and his ilk. Without Fox news, radical leftists like Van Jones would still be helping shape policy that affects the rest of us. I refuse to believe that well respected reporters like Chris Wallace, Britt Hume, Greta VanSustren and Bill O'Reilly are somehow not credible because they are a part of Foxnews. It is interesting to note that the more the Obama administration whines about Fox, the higher their ratings go!

All the Obama administration is doing by going after FOX is detracting from the real issues in this country, they know that it is getting worse by the day for them, the ironic thing is that they should be listening to what FOX has to say instead of trying to sensor them. They are fighting a battle they can't win and they can't be that ignorant not to realize it.

It's team work. Foxnews is not crediable because of it's reporters and they are not crediable because of Fox. Bill O'Reilly is simply not crediable period. Bill is just entertainment like any clown, just like the clown Rush.

And, no, they are not well respected.

Dew, prove it. Asking tough questions of both sides is good reporting. You have been watching CNN for so long that you believe those tough questions are unfair to your guy. This is how journalism is supposed to be practiced. Fox uncovered creeps like Van Jones and the ACORN scandal. The rest of the networks? Total silence. Shameful.

DEWDROPPEDIN, there use to be a dive bar on Clark St. named "The Dewdropin", maybe you are trapped in there somewhere and can't get out, is that your problem?
