50 years ago — 1959

The Albert Lea High School football team raised its season record to 5-1 with a 21-0 shutout over Red Wing. Dave Palmer scored two touchdowns and Jim Thompson added one for the Tigers.

The Wells High School football team clinched a share of the Middle Eight Conference title with a 24-7 victory over Truman. Scoring touchdowns for Wells were Bruce Virnig, Dan Roberts and Dave Schreiber.

Touchdowns by Glen Jensen (two), Larry Nelson and Doug Cipra led Glenville to a 28-0 win over Adams.

Tim Schultz scored two touchdowns and Al Beach scored on a 50-yard run for Freeborn in their 30-14 victory over Alden. Gary Schoenrock scored on a 65-yard run for Alden.

25 years ago — 1984

ALHS senior Deb Stoltz served for 30 points in its 3-0 volleyball win over Winona.

Named to the Big Nine All-Conference cross country boys’ team from ALHS were Brian Jemmings and Tom Gries. Scott Bennett received honorable mention. Amy Stadheim of ALHS was named to the girls’ Big Nine All-Conference cross country team and Cheryl McDonald and Tracy Hernandez received honorable mention.

Paul Broten had a hat trick for the Minnesota Gophers hockey team in its 8-1 victory over the University of Maine. The Gophers had a 4-1-1 record in the WCHA.

10 years ago — 1999

The Section 1AA cross country meet, held at Brooktree Golf Course in Owatonna, was won by Eric Beck of ALHS in the boys’ division. Beck advanced to the state tournament. In the girls’ division Melissa Roche placed seventh and advanced to her fourth straight state meet appearance.

Doug Christopherson of Albert Lea scored a hole-in-one on the 131-yard, 13th hole at the Albert Lea Golf Course.

The ALHS girls’ swimming team defeated Waseca 97-87. Winners for Albert Lea were Naomi Gregerson in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle, Laura Grund in the 200 individual medlay and the 100 backstroke, Kristen Rietsema in the 500 freestyle, Chelsea Cole in the 200 freestyle and Gregerson, Grund, Cole and Brooke Kaasa in the 200-yard freestyle and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
