Brianna Broitzman trial slated for April
Co-defendant’s date has not been set
Published Thursday, September 17, 2009
The jury trial for 20-year-old Brianna Broitzman, who faces multiple charges related to alleged abuse of residents at Good Samaritan Society of Albert Lea, has been scheduled for April 2010.
According to scheduling in Broitzman’s file, the jury trial will be April 12, with the pre-trial March 26.
The trial date for co-defendant Ashton Larson, 19, who faces similar charges as Broitzman, has not yet been set. She is scheduled to appear for a contested omnibus hearing later this month.
Brianna Broitzman
Both young women face 11 charges ranging from fifth-degree assault, criminal abuse of a vulnerable adult, disorderly conduct and mandatory failure to report suspected abuse at the nursing home.
Charges in the case came in December after an investigation into the allegations of abuse by local and Minnesota Department of Health officials; however, details of the allegations surfaced August 2008 after the release of the Department of Health’s report.
The report concluded four teenagers were involved in verbal, sexual and emotional abuse of 15 residents at the nursing home in Albert Lea from January through May 2008. The residents suffered from mental degradation conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Where is she now? Is she being 'held' or 'watched over' at all by authorities?

April...are you kidding, can they drag this out any longer?

How can one person go to court and be tried in a few weeks and others like these girls not have to go to trial for over a year. There is something wrong here. I am sure the lawyers are happy the longer it draws out the more they will make. Also the more it is costing the taxpayers. Government gets harder & harder to understand.

More time for plea bargaining?

Snowbird1, some people request a speedy trial, which makes the process... well, speedy. Others make it as long as they can. Either way it is their right. One word: Karma

grateful1...why are you stalking her myspace? That's a little creepy too...

And, no, she is not being held by authorities. She is and has been able to roam free. Her alleged actions disgust me. She struts around like she has done nothing wrong, when, by her own words, she abused the residents. Justice is NOT being served by making the family members of those that were abused wait for a trial. Maybe the lawyers are hoping that the victims will all die off.

tigerinduluth-actually a person who has her as a friend showed me this. See people like that don't even have their own friends respect. so okay I was shown and I read and quite frankly it made me sick so yes i made a comment. I guess I am a "creepy stalker". I admit it. You read this article and responded, so......you are? Please dont say a member of the fan club!

I think it is pretty unfair that because she is not being held to say that she is "strutting around like she did nothing wrong."

Some advice to people. If you don't want people knowing your personal life, etc., then don't put it out there on Facebook or Myspace. If you are going to do it, be careful what you put out there because it can come back to haunt you later....
I don't know what grateful's original comment was but if she put something out there for the public to see on Facebook, fair game IMO.

Are you serious???
Well karma and payback are big b-words that's all I have to say. That shows me she still hasn't learned. What will she say when her future employer (outside doing the laundry in jail) checks it out.
Remember, even if you think you have deleted something in cyberspace or e-mail, chances are someone has a copy....be careful what you put in writing or post on the internet.

They are dragging this on but let's hope the jury will still remember what has happened to the victims and their families in the next 7 months. And, I did see Broitzman walking around "freely" over the summer. She seemed to not have a care in the world. I think this will show more of the delays that Freeborn Cty. has seemed to have. They should have set the date for much sooner and had these abusive females on trial already. Also, to what snowbird1 said: maybe they are waiting so long because of the way the economy is. They just want the money so they have to drag on the trial.

Hey, if you had nothing much left to lose, you wouldn't have a care in the world either.

Tribune - What in the world was wrong with taxpayer's comment? Do you just remove things someone flags as offensive or do you actually think about it?
You remove something like that right away but took you long enough to remove comments that had offensive racial implications...

Well grateful1...you said myspace in your post, not facebook. You would know this if your comment wasn't offensive. And the girl is in my grade. I know her and she's a pretty normal person. People mess up, she's goin to court and what the court decides to give her is what she'll get. They aren't going to throw someone in jail for a couple years to HOLD them until their trial. That would be stupid. She has every right to walk around and do what she wants. Until she's charged, she's still innocent. This isn't the 1800's...It's not like we are going to go looking for her with pitchforks and torches and put her on the blocks. We are a lot more advanced than that, and I would hope you can eventually mature to that.

This is an outrage! The families of those abused by the defendants have waited long enough. To drag this trial out until April is unfair to the memory of those who suffered at the hands of the defendants. Albert Lea courts can't be that backed up. I hope the attornies in this case use the time from this moment to that to build a strong case so that these "girls" get the maximum punishment for waht they did.

tigerinduluth, are you kidding me about her being normal? What occurred was a heinous act against not just one but many vulnerable adults. This is definitely not normal, in my opinion it is just the opposite, it is incredibly abnormal.

The longer it takes for them to get this case to court, the more chance there is, that the people who would testify against them, will no longer remember, or will no longer be on this earth.

Tigerinduluth; sexually, emotionally, physically and verbally abusing 15 elderly, helpless, sick people, is not normal! If this is what you consider to be normal, then you are just as sick, perverted and cruel as they are! (Choose your friends wisely.)
