‘Albert Lea High School’ words spray-painted at Austin’s Wescott Field

Published Tuesday, September 22, 2009

The Austin Packers football team doesn’t play Albert Lea until Oct. 21, but they might already have some motivation.

The words “Albert Lea High School” were spray-painted on several buildings and walkways at Wescott Field sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, according to a police report.

There was also an empty bleach container near the field, although it is unclear if it was dumped on the grass.

Football coach Tim Hermann reported the incident to police.

There are no suspects in the case and the exact cost of the damage has not been determined.

The albert lea kids are just mad that their team can not beat AUSTIN just because of that they do not need to vandalize things.

This just continues the tradition that these schools have always doing something to the other's field. I remember hearing stories about how the night before Albert Lea's homecoming a few students from Austin to some lye and burned a big "A" right on the 50 yd line. To get back at Austin for their next home game a few Albert Lea Students burned with lye a huge "AL" on Austin's 50 yd line. I also remember during the Hormel strike instead of chanting "We got spirit yes we do" we chanted "We got jobs how about you?" It is said that buildings were sprayed painted but that can be sand blasted off. Hopefully, these kids remember to keep it harmless. Go Tigers beat the FudgePackers!!!!!

This has gone on for years, its a school tradition, its harmless,no one got hurt, but because of the DO-GOODERS naming it vandalizing the police have to get involved,i would rather see a rival school name painted everywhere than gang signs!

This dates back to the caveman days when they used it to paint each others Rockball field. I believe they served Brontisauris Ribs during half time along with Alligator Ade.

was there, or was there not a tree planted on austins field before?

I believe the tree planting was 1983.

Are AL and Austin even still rivals?

Maybe AL should focus on winning a game and not doing stuff like this.

Albert Lea must be so proud of their graduates. We have alhsgrad90 calling Austin’s team Fudge Packers and the class of ’83 spray painting and planting trees on their football field. Even today the so called ‘tradition’ lives on.

alhsgrad90 - Friendly reminder to you.

The term "fudge packer" is offensive, particularly to gay men. I have no issue with you cheering on your team and doing some friendly "trash talk" to Austin but perhaps you could choose a different term to use.

Alsgrad90, if you are truly a ’90 graduate I guess that you are about 37 years old. A “grown” 37 year old man that uses a term like Fudge Packers, your parents must be so proud. Question: Do you often feel it necessary to use derogatory homosexual terms to feel better about your own sexual insecurities?
