Walmart helps Halverson teachers

Ten Halverson Elementary School teachers got some help in purchasing classroom supplies this week from Walmart through its new Teacher Rewards program.

In the past, Walmart has recognized one teacher in the district with its Teacher of the Year program.

“With the economy the way it is, Walmart decided to help more teachers,” said Evonne Meade-Pechacek, an assistant manager at the Albert Lea store. “Walmart really does appreciate everything teachers do for students.”

Stephanie Adams, department manager in the school supply department, talked with District 241 officials about where needs were greatest within the school system, and associates voted to help teachers at Halverson.

Earlier this week at a school assembly, Halverson Principal Del Stein drew the names of 10 teachers from a container with all the school’s teachers inside. Each of the 10 teachers received a $100 teacher reward card.

Teachers receiving cards were: Frances Heilman, Lonnie Nelson, Laurie Herman, Mandra Peterson, Michele Burkard, Jane Grund, Lisa Schoeneman, Paul Woodside, Carolyn Noland and Amy Lerum.

Stein expressed his appreciation to the Walmart representatives. He said nationally, the average teacher spends between $300 and $400 of his or her own money into running a classroom.

“So we thank you very much,” he said.
