I would like to think that most of the volunteers gave of their time for this project, knowing that they might not get anything in return. After all, isn't that the true spirit of giving? Those volunteers or donaters "expecting" to get a private showing of this home, seems a bit selfish, to me.
I think it is awesome that the DeVries family has opened up their home to the community for a day, in order to raise money for a worthy cause. How many of us would do the same? How many of us would want thousands of strangers parading through our home, tracking in mud, etc.? I think this act of generousity shows why the DeVries family was perfect for this EMHE gift. They will forever give back to the community without expecting anything in return. THAT is the true spirit of giving!

Rumors should not be spread if you don't KNOW FOR SURE ALL OF THE FACTS! You could be damaging someone's valuable reputation when they do not deserve it!
And it is MUCH more than just money that Al and his family put into this project! I know for a fact that they worked night and day (taking time off from their regular jobs) on this massive project for a lot longer than any other volunteers!
GREAT job to all of Larson Contracting and the other workers! You should be proud of all that you got accomplished in such a short amount of time!

Do you suppose the Albert Lea Tribune has been deleting these negative comments because they do not want the DeVries family to have to see such negativity directed towards their home project and the people responsible for such a generous gift??? Al Larson gave a HUGE amount of money to this project and that is a GREAT thing! This cost him and his businesses A LOT of money and he deserves a lot of credit for his generosity. Before you start bashing him, give him and his family some credit for all of the work they put into this project for this wonderful family!
Why do people have to be so negative in everything?? The Extreme Home Makeover TV show is named EXTREME because that is what they do-they make it an EXTREME HOME MAKEOVER! If you don't like it, don't watch it! Or direct your comments to ABC themselves instead of complaining on here, which is doing NO good! All this complaining does is make you look jealous! I don't see the family complaining about their home, so neither should you! The show gives the families financial counseling to help them deal with the added expenses, etc. and it is up to the family to be responsible with the gift they are given. I believe this family will do that and be responsible.
And to those of you who are criticizing the people who have been so generous to this family, what have you done lately to help others in your community? It is easy to look out the window and not in the mirror!

If people are feeling as if they have volunteered but not "helped" enough, reach out to your community and HELP someone else! You may not get recognition or "vip" status, but the point is to HELP! It should not matter whether you have done something big or something small, what matters is whether or not you have made a difference (for the better) in someone's life!
From the articles I have read about this family, they have volunteered and helped out others their whole lives. I am so glad that they were able to be on the receiving end for once! May they continue to be blessed!
And way to go to ALL the people who were involved in EVERY way on this project! You should be proud! This job could not have been done without ALL of you!

Wow! For people who are quoting scripture and therefore "claiming" to be Christians, there is a lot of negativity going around! Think about the example you are setting for non-believers!!! Is that really what Jesus would want???? Please consider this before posting any more negative comments.
Please just be THANKFUL that you were able to be chosen for such an honor-serving and helping out another person/family! There were many, like myself, who couldn't be there and would have LOVED to have been able to be there, even if it was to just stand around! To be able to be even a SMALL part of such a wonderful thing should make you proud, not jealous! I would imagine it is impossible to know EXACTLY how many volunteers you may need for such a MASSIVE project! Better to be safe and have plenty than to not have enough!
GREAT job to the Al Larson family, Larson Contracting and ALL of the other volunteers and businesses and individual people who gave up so much of their time and money to help out this family! Just think, It's almost time to go home and catch up on some much-needed sleep :-) WAY TO GO!

adamwilkie- I don't think that menace and max08 meant anything negative by their comments. This "extreme" home makeover is drawing A LOT of attention and people who are not able to be a part of volunteering are just curious about it. It is exciting to watch and I, myself, would love to see the house (and yes, I would pay to view it). And, yes, if it was my house, I would not mind having an open house and sharing my "fortune" with others. I am not saying that the DeVries family should have an open house-I believe that should be their decision and their choice-but I think it would be an excellent idea! Heck, I wouldn't mind if they kept the proceeds for themselves. I am sure they have plenty of medical bills and other bills that the money could help pay (and I think others would love to be able to help them in that aspect also). I think people are being drawn in and are excited for this family, as they should be. This is something that usually is just seen on TV, so to have this happen so close to home, people want to be involved.

I hear they are asking for duct tape items for the boys' room. Why not ask the Red/Green show to show up with donations? I believe I have seen numerous duct tape items from them... And whatever happened to the girls' Reese's items? Were they kept for her and will they be added to??? Just some thoughts... This is so exciting! What a great thing to happen to this family and to the area!

I am amazed by all of the negativity directed towards the DeVries family. I find it very sad that people feel they "deserve" to look at the inside of someone's house just because they "volunteered" to help build it. Isn't volunteering supposed to be giving something of yourself without EXPECTING something in return???
That volunteering spirit is EXACTLY why the DeVries family was chosen for this makeover. They had given so much of THEIR time and money to the school BEFORE the makeover show, without expecting something in return. And now, even after the show is over, they are STILL giving to the school. This school is funded by donations and tuition and it is hard for schools such as this one to make it without those donations.
I think it was a brilliant idea for them to charge for tours of their home. They could have done so and kept the money, but instead, they chose to GIVE all of the money to a cause they feel strongly about. That giving spirit is what gives us HOPE in the world. This world needs more people like the DeVries'. Not many of us would want to open up our HOME to complete strangers and allow them to wander through our HOME. The DeVries family has shown what true generosity and giving is all about.
