Cabinman, you hit the target. Remember that over 70 percent of the inmate population in U.S. prisons claim to be christians...the "christian" title or the christian "club" just doesn't do anything for me these days. It certainly doesn't provoke a feeling of trust.

I've been smoking for over 30 years; ever since I married, I have vowed not to smoke in the home, in a car, around my wife or around any children (not just my own). I'm one of the rare smokers that is actually in favor of the ban. In fact, it is possible that the only way I can quit is if tobacco sales were banned, period.

Children and students need to understand that for many, the addiction is permanent and you can never quit after you start.

Thumbs up to all of you non-smokers in favor of the ban...

Custodial Mom: Not everyone is trying to "diss" you. You need to remember that "District Attorney", "Welfare" and "County" are government. The government does not generate income; it's only source of income is the taxpayers. So everytime I hear "District Attorney" or "County", I know that I am flipping the bill for it.

Some taxpayers are offended and don't want to be held financially responsible for social failures. I personally wouldn't want to have to pay taxes because you and your ex couldn't work things out. I am also against dead-beat dads, because the taxpayer frequently has to pick up the tab.

I know this argument is rhetorical. I don't think all women are trying to suck money out of the fathers; I just don't think that everyone's children of failed marriages is my financial responsibility either...

That being said, in the absence of any other solutions, I agree that the courts and collectors should either commit to their goals or get out of the business. They aren't very good at it, because they are probably under-staffed for this department. Getting them up to staff would be more taxpayer dollars, and now you know what I mean by "rhetorical argument".

Nadiene; I don't hate the rich, I just don't think I should be held financially responsible for their mistakes. Buying and selling stock on Wall Street is high risk and a gamble; sub-prime mortgages were a gamble. Why are we paying for their high-risk ventures and Las Vegas mentality?

Likewise, if you lose your shirt in a casino, I don't feel that I should have to pay for your losses, even if it means you won't be able to spend that money at a Walmart.

Personally, I think the Reverend wants your money. I hope you're not one of those people that believe you won't be granted passage into God's Kingdom unless you report every Sunday morning, precisely at 8:30, to a stucco building bearing a cross, and empty your pockets; if so, then you are a victim of the oldest brainwash in civilization.

I've dabbled with stocks before; as far as I'm concerned, Wall Street is an extension of Las Vegas; for most, personal gain is at stake and it is synonymous with gambling.

Imagine going to Vegas, losing your shirt in a casino; when you come out, taxpayers are lined up to offer condolences and give you your cash back. Now how ridiculous is that? These investors knew the risk, and the risk wasn't any less than playing craps at a table.

Lovelylady, I am sorry that the opinion personally offended you; personally, I feel that an apology should come from the author, not the Tribune. I hope you can consider the source and not lose any sleep over this, as awful as it is.

If it makes you feel any better, I am tormented by the thought that the author is probably a registered voter.

I think it's more than sour grapes, trifid.

Nobody is going to dig us out of this mess in 4 years...Nobody! It will take an entire generation to recover now, even if all the right decisions are made for the next 20 years.

A question I've always had, probably more relevent now than before; FDIC is only an insurance company, and we have seen insurance companies fail before. Can the federal government actually "cave in" financially? When will we know that it's time to take our money out of the banks and stash it under our mattresses?

Well said, Jody. You are right about the Democracy in America today. I didn't see an opportunity to vote for the bailout of Wall Street, Merrill Lynch, or the rest of those that made billions over the last few decades. Did you get a chance to vote for this?

Wait until you hear about the new re-designed pennies that the U.S. Mint is going to manufacture next year. Over 7 trillion will be made, and the cost to manufacture a penny will be an estimated 1.4 cents each. No, that's not a typo; they will cost more to make than what they're worth on the street. I'm sure that the brains behind this makes a six-figure income.

I know, all Americans are screaming "We need more pennies!" President Lincoln must be rolling over in his grave by now.
