Intheknow - Unnecessary comment about the City Manager's competence at financial planning. What kind of $$$ planning have you done at that level?
The comp plan is not irrelevant nor obsolete. The $400k cut will hurt, but has no relevance to the comp plan. You are wrong again. It is a document that will guide future direction for our city into the future.

DoubleD, it's not that you've asked questions. People generally welcome questions when asked in a way where there can be compromise, learning or understanding. It's how you ask the questions. You've come before the planning commission in a confrontational manner. You have done the same with the comp plan steering committee as well as city employees on different subjects on different occasions. Many other people have witnessed and experienced this behavior.
To reiterate, the development of the new plan began Mar '07 with the selection of the consultants. There's still no way that you can convince me that comments in Nov '08, make them anything but last minute. Agenda's, meeting notes, public meeting input, draft chapters were available every step of the way for review and comment.
As a person running for office in Albert Lea - especially the office of Mayor - one would think that he would have made more obvious attempts to become involved in a process as important as this one. As stated previously, the council candidates came to the steering committee meetings. He did not.

Dorman's comments not last minute, please! They are completely last minute. Consider that the steering committee has met for over a year now. Final comments and review are occurring now -- that is normal practice for a project of this magnitude. We always knew that we would have the summer to make additional comments. The plan has been posted on the city web site EVERY step of the way. Dan submits comments on 11/10? Pretty last minute, if you ask me. ALEDA did not play an active role in the comp plan steering committee process. Where was he during the normal course of the project? He was always invited. So was our new mayor. Council candidates showed up and actively participated better than either Dan Dorman or Mike Murtaugh. The way both are handling this is just plain wrong and based completely on their "late" timeframes.

The cost for the comp plan revision was a REAL big secret - boy do all of you have your heads in the sand? The cost for the comp plan revision was printed in the paper numerous times and was brought up in numerous council meetings. If the cost is such a big issue where were each of you to question this cost. Again my comments from prior other stories - GET INVOLVED!. It costs you nothing to do this and you all can become part of the solution and not add to the problems with unture speculation.

Truth - Good idea about the city web site having a place to post ideas in real time. But remember this will have price tag attached to it the city will have to bear. Are you willing to add another cost to the city budget for the priviledge of do this? You want your voice heard go on the Planning Commission and have some effect on the future planning of this community. Decisions made here are given to the city council for ratification.

Observer - I am not part of the "good old boys" never have been and never will be. But I strongly believe that I am one voice and if I have a constructive idea I will voice my idea face to face. Just remember you harvest what you sow. If you want to be proud of your city get involved. If you wanted responses from your councilman stop sending emails and put a personal touch to your comments or ideas - go visit him at home and make your wishes or comments known face to face.

Truth - The commissions are not the problem and new commission have not and are not being formed like you state. I believe you have some very good ideas for this city. Stop your whining and become involved. This would be a good and constructive way for you to contribute in your own way to this city.

Airport Advisory Board, Advisory Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board,
Library Advisory Board, Human Rights Commission, and the Heritage Preservation Commission.
If interested, please fill out an application and submit it to the City Manager's Office by December 15th, 221 East Clark St.,
Albert Lea, MN.
This is straight off of the City web site. This is what I am talking about. These commissions actually have some power to effect positive change within our fair city of Albert Lea and your voice will be heard.

Truth - I am not saying he will fail, what I am saying is the learning curve he will have to endure will cause important direction and decisions to be sidelined for a while. I hope with everything in me that he will succeed but I have seen this sitation before in other cities I have lived and it was not a good thing for the city in general. But Mike is only "one" vote on the council and I hope the other council members do the right thing and lead Mike down the right path for Albert Lea.

Oakwood/Circle Drive park is the CENTER of many a child's world in this neighorhood. To hear that "justmealmn" is being critical of a very good thing that will occur to this park makes me feel sorry for this person. Sorry because "justmealmn" must not have had a neighorhood park like this one to call home when growing up to experience what it was like. Myself as a resident that lives across the street from this park watch constantly the neighorhood kids having fun in the park despite the age and condition of the present equipment. This park is one that is heavily used almost daily in any season and seeing that we are not being forgotten by the city is breath of fresh air to the residents in this area.
Larry Baker has been a very instrumental person in this park "makeover" and letting city staff know that this park should not be forgotten or overlooked. As a resident of this neighorhood that currently does not have children that would utilize this park, it is still a great joy to see all the other children/families having fun using a park as great as this one.
The park upgrade will be realized by all for many years to come and you can not put a price tag on this. Thank you for remembering this neighorhood park and the children of the area. The children using it now and in the future will remember this time in their lives long after they grow up. This is the priceless part!
