This should have been a separate story. How in the name of the wide wide world of sports does a request get this far? Once again, the City Manager is not managing.

• Hear a request from businessmen Amar Singh and Mike Nevins to consider waiving the city portion of unpaid property taxes, penalties and interest from 2007, 2008 and 2009 tax rolls for their new Midwestern Hotel, formerly the Albert Lea Inn.

The outstanding balance is roughly $170,000, with the city’s portion totaling about $33,000 plus penalties and interest for the two parcels the hotel and parking lots occupy.

Councilor Vern Rasmussen questioned whether property taxes have to be cleared up at the time someone purchases a property.

Bjorndal said it is his understanding that the Freeborn County Recorder won’t transfer the deed if the property taxes aren’t paid.

Bjorndal noted he would not recommend the council waive the taxes.

1PoopedMom,

"C'mon Albert Lea." What does that even mean?

The Elks went out because of mismanagement by a few people after Jim was fired. Maybe they were right in firing him, don't know and does not matter.

I would agree the misinformed voters are a problem. Ms. Lester is misinformed if she thinks this is a tool used only by the far right.

That may be oldtimer, but the statement was from Jim Hanson so it is going to put him in the best light. But after Mr. Hoium left, Jim Hanson and a few others drove the place into the ground. He admits he needed a computer to tell him seafood was more popular than steak. And that is just a tip of the iceberg.

Mankind,

I like most people, support this concept. I think the problem with what happened, and why it was a split vote, is that once again there was a poor job of negotiating by city staff.

Justthinking,

Wisconsin residents may not want wind, as it will drive up the costs, as will the Minnesota mandate on Minnesota utilities. The residents that object are objecting to the cost not where the energy is produced.

ConTribuTor, there is no requirement that the renewable energy required by the Minnesota mandate be produced in Minnesota.

This is not new to Minnesota. Anyone driven to Mower County in the few years. The ones in Dexter have been up for four years now? Then there are the turbines on the Buffalo Ridge.

I don't know how you could build a transmission line without compensating the land owners. Unless they are using existing right of way?

Ernie, you seem to be concerned about the cost of electricity. But you are shooting at the wrong people. The utility companies are being forced to generate power this way by regulations passed by our elected officials. Now you want them to buy all the land, who do you think would pay that bill?
