Don't forget volunteering at the Humane Societies and many animal rescue organizations. Consider fostering a cat or a dog...

On You Can Help

It was very different. I knew kids who got the belt, but our parents didn't believe in physical punishment. We never wanted our quiet and kind father to be disappointed in us. We roamed the railroad tracks, played at the foundry in the sandstone, and walked and rode bikes all day every day and everywhere. We rarely got rides and I remember stopping at neighbors asking for a drink of water at times on our hikes. Mom would pack us a lunch and we would go to a park and not come home until supper. We played after dark "Starlight Moonlight" and had tickets we bought at school for the Saturday Matinee. We had nickle phospates at the Coop with Tulip Sundaes, got penny candy at Russell's grocery and climbed the neighborhood trees. Nobody kicked us out. We ate rhubarb out of the garden and apples out of the trees. Our parents didn't come to all our childhood sports games and didn't ruin them either. It was great fun and lucky we did survive it all.

Separation of Church and State... it is simple, yet hard for some to grasp. Freedom of speech and religion is not harmed, it is reinforced by keeping it away from public schools. Cheerleaders for Christ doesn't seem respectful of religion anyway.

Although I have seen similar actions, and agree with most you have said, employees are NOT required to give two weeks notice. The most common way of quitting these days is to just stop showing up for work. Inexperience and poor training is the main reason managers abuse their staff. It is rampant on both side these days. I was at a very busy pizza place recently and an oven was malfunctioning. You would not believe how rude the customers were to the staff who helplessly worked on. One man yelled at and demanded a staff pay him his change out of his own pocket or he would walk out without paying. This was while the cashier was trying to reload the receipt roll! This surly older man I would not doubt attends church on Sundays. The last thing the kid said was "have a nice night!" He even looked like he meant it.

Back in the saddle! Good for you! "Gin crazed Cracker" Love it! The thing that is really getting to everyone is the lack of respect people give anyone for simply disagreeing with them. No one should allow that someone yell "Liar" during a presidential address, no matter who that president is. Funny to see Al Qaeda using the same term. Ironic...

Thanks Julie, a very nice treatise to what is needed in human discourse. One of our more fiscally successful Governors, Arnie Carlsen, said recently that the main thing he learned from being Governor is that you can't charge in expecting just your way or the highway, What he accomplished was though Bi-partisan listening, cooperative effort, and looking out for the best interest of his people of Minnesota, not his just party. He said this was one of his criticisms of Pawlenty.

There is a recent saying... "pets are not accessories". I cannot tell you many people I know get a puppy and few weeks or months later "need to sell it, not working out..." I could have told them that, but
1) sell? why do so many people think they can make money off their mutts? The poor dog just needs a home. You will not make any money from your litter of mutt "Pit Bull types", or "lab/spaniel" crosses. Quit breeding your dogs, so your kids can see puppies born! See them die in shelters daily!
2) why get them? You are usually single, have small children and the last thing you need is a puppy you know nothing about raising. They need to be watched all the time.
3) Do not keep your pets outside. They are social animals. They want and desire to be with us, not in some stupid chained up situation exposed to harsh weather and heat.
4) chaining makes dogs territorial and aggressive. How many bites occur because the neighbor kid goes to pet a chained dog? They are also bored and live their lives trying get get away.
5) Pets are expensive. If you can't pay your rent, chances are you can't afford the proper care for your dog.

On Be sure to spend time with your pets

I do not believe in torture of animals at all, and I do think companies need to put forth much more effort to this cause. I do NOT believe everything PETA says. Their own workers were caught disposing of dogs and cats they had taken into their care from shelters and killed. They admit 97% of pets are euthenized in their care. They tried to put down all the Pit Bulls in not only Michael Vick's case, but also in the "Barkansas bust" of 150 animals found at a "sanctuary". Peta came toe to toe with Bad Rap and For Pitty's Sake to demand all dogs be euthenized (most of them were Katrina and Rita surviors and pets that Tammy Hanson took to her hell hole for them). Look it up. Yes, it is obvious that I do animal rescue, but I have no time for PETA, they are not about walking the walk, just nut jobs talking the talk and attention getting displays.

No one is preaching, but you. There are scientific studies if you would read the book. I didn't just jump on board , I have followed Dan Beuttners career for almost 30 years. I do not need to defend myself further to a anti "go outside, go to the Y for excercise and commardery" sort. Everything will change is 20- 30 years, not just diets. For gosh sakes think of all the deaths from Margerine or Oleo in the 50's and 60's.
I have lost 55 pounds in the past 3 years. I live in the country. Yes, that is a long time, but not because I did any sort of "diet", I changed the way I looked at my life. Don't criticize me because of my choices. It's not like I am on a grapefruit diet.
