Here is a question for all of you who may think Thorne Crest is not at fault. How many of you would like to be in respitory distress for over 11 hours before something is done? Or, how would you like to watch a very much loved family member suffer because they can not breathe? Think about that before you say "at least they made an effort" or "The nursing homes aren't totally to blame, sometimes their hands are tied." NO ONE SHOULD EVER SUFFER LIKE THAT.

Nisperos--
At least you are getting the severity of the issue at hand.
For the rest of you that think this facility was "at least making an effort" has no clue. The staff ONLY made efforts AFTER family members continually insisted they see to her. I think it's clear in the article that since she kept "putting her call light on frequently during the night", the staff was tired of tending to her. NO ONE in that facility knew how to use the respirator she was supposed to have been using. How does that translate to "at least making an effort"?

Although this story may be factual, it is only from the perspective of the facility. I am a family member of the woman who died and there is so much more to the story than what is written here. They were negligent in the care of my family member. Plain and simple. Why did they wait to call 911 when she was is OBVIOUS respitory distress? I feel a bit better knowing that the state found them negligent. Hopefully, no one else has to lose a family member from their incompetance.

Kudos to the community for pulling together to make this fundraiser such a remarkable success! Almost $26,000 is nothing to sneeze at! Thank you Freeborn County for caring enough to support your neighbors through giving your hard-earned money to the Red Cross so they can help those in crisis.

I am a non-smoker. NEVER even had the desire to try. I pride myself on that. The way I see it, everyone has a choice when it comes to the habit. If you want to smoke and breathe toxic substances into your system, that is YOUR choice. But, I should be given the same choice not to breathe toxic substances from someone else making that choice. (ie: second-hand smoke) I do have the right to clean air. Wouldn't any business that caters to the public still be a public place?

Sounds to me like all of you are just out to become a lynch mob! I would rather see the paper error on the side of caution than see a bunch of people in this community set out with pitch forks and fire sticks ready to hang these women. Do they deserve everything the judicial system can throw at them? ABSOLUTELY! Obviously this is a highly emotionally-charged issue. The Tribune has done it's job.

LZ94,
I did not imply that school is a business. However, job performance is essential to success in any career. I'm not talking about advanced kids vs. remidial kids. I'm talking about teacher accountability for those who are just putting in their time to get a pay check. The ones who should retire but have seniority. The ones who have the teacher's union behind them. And you know they are out there. Those kids who aren't "meeting the standards", what are teachers doing to help improve their education? You state that you can't just send the remidial kids home but I think that is exactly what's happening.
I have several kids who are either going through or have gone through the school system. I'm tired of teachers not caring enough to help the parents who ask for the help to get their kids where they should be. I'm tired of the teachers who can't tell me how my child is doing at any given time. They have to "get back" to me after consulting a grade book. I have run into a few GREAT teachers but they are FAR AND FEW between! To those great teachers, keep up the wonderful work. Your dedication is recognized and appreciated.
