On Families in elder abuse case are using online networks

I think one of the very important things that family of loved ones in nursing homes, and nursing home administration and workers need to go over and agree upon in the care plan, is the DNR. DNR is Do Not Resuscitate. A major misunderstanding with this, is that many mistake it to also mean, do not treat; which is so not correct. DNR means that you do not wish to take measures to have your loved one resuscitated once they quit breathing and no pulse. Until that time, every measure MUST be taken to ensure the best care possible, which means if they become unresponsive or are in difficulty, they are taken to medical services....immediately.

You absolutely MUST get it in your loved ones care plan, that should any emergency of this type, or whatever type you feel your loved one is prone to, occur, hospitalization is a must, and the ambulance must be called immediately. You have the right to tell the facility to call an ambulance immediately. You have the right to tell them not to wait for orders. You have the right to insist that your loved one be taken to emergency. Do not resuscitate and do not treat, are two entirely different situations.

Having said that, I know it is to late for your loved one cooper06, and you have my deepest sympathy. I would also suggest, that it is never to late to call on the support of others to help you through this time. FANHA (Families Against Nursing Home Abuse) is a great group of people, and you might benefit from their great compassion.

"you people need to realize that stuff like this or worse than this happens at nursing homes across the world EVERYDAY...the tribune needs to quit looking at all the bad things about the home and look at the good" Nike, are you kidding? Because abuse and neglect happen everyday somewhere, that makes it ok? We should let substandard care go unnoticed and not held accountable because they won an award for something last year? The ONLY way change will come and make long term care good for EVERYONE is if you stand up, bring it out in the open and then change it! Why are you so afraid to have the best care possible for the people of your community, your loved ones and yourself? Why do you not want to see an end to abuse, neglect and needless early death? I'm curious; how do you want to be treated when you enter a nursing home? Do you want to ensure your safety and excellent care, or are you willing to play the lottery and pray that you get lucky enough to be the 1 in 9 that dies untouched by abuse or neglect?
