Agreed, headscratcher. I don't understand why people feel the need to be so vindictive when commenting.

Free, I don't know enough about the rental ordinance to offer an intelligent opinion. YES, I support free market trade and try to make purchases accordingly. Also, I'm very supportive of local ownership of business. It annoys me that Walmart is in every community within 20 miles of each other in southern MN. ie: Albert Lea, Austin, Owatonna, Waseca, Faribault, etc. What this has done to small business it tragic. When I lived in the area I avoided Walmart like the plague.

Free: I would love to chat with you about life in the beautiful tropics, however that would be way off topic here.
If you're interested...shoot me an email and we'll chat. mojofree2be@yahoo.com. Any of you mean-beans, don't bother, I'll block your email. (sorry, just speaking from experience, you know who you are)

Truth, Thanks for asking. I'm sorry to say that no, I don't think Albert Lea is probusiness. Twenty-three years ago I left Albert Lea and relocated to Iowa (don't go there!) where I was welcomed as a newcomer and found employment that offered a very good lifestyle along with a great place to raise a family. Since then I have moved on and currently live in the Caribbean. I visit my family in Albert Lea often and with every visit I am struck by the beauty of the community. It is idyllic. More than once I have considered moving back to my hometown, only to find that good paying employment opportunities are slim if not impossible to find. Why is that? Living here I am proud to say I am from Minnesota. It is a progressive state with a health conscience attitude and willing to try new things. It's fun to have some bragging rights. But what has happened to Albert Lea? Why doesn't the community advance? These are questions that deserve serious consideration, not just name-calling, blame- throwing rhetoric.

For the love of God, can't we all just get along and have an intelligent debate?

I agree with alhsgrad90. What company will continue to throw good money after bad? It's the bottom line that counts. And true, controlledhyperness, perhaps the economy is offering an easy excuse for companies to close unprofitable locations.
What I ponder is this: I remember the economical boom in commerce that the intersection of I90 and I35 promised to bring to Albert Lea. I'm still waiting for the boom, what happened?

This article and the posts pull on my heart strings. Such wonderful memories and such a kind man. Isn't it ironic that a simple popcorn man could have such an impact?
Thank you Merrill.

I always wonder when I read these personally attacking reader comments.......would you say the same to Robert if you were talking to him face to face?

bobbyg... try this for making Maid Rite's at home. The secret is to steam the beef, I use a double boiler. Keep breaking it up as it cooks. Then add soy sauce and a little A-1 steak sauce. More soy than A-1. That's it. It's a pretty good recreation ... I've introduced them to friends who never heard of Maid Rite and they have always been a hit. Maid Rite in ALB would be great!
