Outoftowner- interesting that you bring up that people should consider taking care of their parents with the help of home health aids. This is a growing trend. My classmates that are from other countries have a hard time understanding the whole "nursing home" concept. In their countries, there are very few nursing homes because family cares for family. Obviously, every situation is different.

Yes, nursing home residents pay an enourmous amount of money. The technology used/needed in the nursing home is very expensive.

fromthearea - my point was that I really hope people don't judge the other staff at good sams and other nursing homes by these girls actions. I did have a loved one in a nursing home in this area and they received top care, my family couldn't have been happier.

I have had clinicals at Good Sam's and have no complaints about the staff there. They are very helpful and competent. Yes, they are understaffed, but so are most nursing homes. If you criticizers think you can do so much better than by all means, go get your nursing assistant certification. It's not as easy as you might think. Better yet, try to be the nurse that already has too much to do and also has to supervise all the CNA's. What these girls did is wrong but do not judge the rest of the staff (or their parents) by their actions.

I wish Albert Lea had another choice. As a renter, I can't get anything with a dish. Great timing for Charter to hike up prices. I would think cable tv would be one of the first things for people to get rid of in tough times, and especially if they are raising prices.

I have lost a lot of respect for the Tribune after reading this. Like someone stated earlier... what a coincidence that this happened months ago but is just making the paper now.

Fountain Lake will eventually become a wetland. My question, is it a natural or man made lake?

The lake is shallow, which gives the algae direct access to sunlight, which makes it grow/bloom/whatever. I agree, it is pointless to keep treating the lake. Another reason for this problem is all the landowners using fertilizers on their lawn that drains into the lake. Fountain Lake was one of the topics discussed in two seperate college courses I have taken (at 2 seperate colleges). This has to be one of the most pointless things the city can spend their money on.

NoDFL, you bring up a good point about why rent is less in Albert Lea. There are many more unskilled workers here. Rent in Albert Lea will not go up so much that it is equal to rent in Rochester or Winona. There is a HUGE demand for renters in Winona, so a landlord can easily charge $300 or more per person in their dwellings, even more if it is close to campus.

Unskilled workers and new grads might only be able to afford a run-down rental, and that is their choice. I know people that would much rather live in a dumpy house and spend their money on vehicles or vacations or big screen televisions. All you have to do is open up the paper or take a drive and anyone can see that there is no shortage of rentals in this city.

Free-

I did not rent in Winona. I was a social work major living in the dorms. My experience with rental property in Winona is that of my college friends, cousins, and siblings - they all had nice places, which would surprise many people (since they are college students after all). Yes their rent is higher, but compare the cities. Winona is larger, has a bigger demand for renters, and is overall a nicer city - there is much more to do.

Every city has dumpy places - and from the outside it is hard to tell what is a rental and what is not. I am judging the differences between Albert Lea and Winona by my personal experiences (the buildings I have been in).

I have spoken to my landlord about this ordinance and they made it clear that they opposed this ordinance because they didn't want to have to raise my rent. I took it for granted that they knew more on the effects of this issue than I did.

As far as neighbors - most of them are renters themselves, and no, I have not met many let alone made them my friends. None are anywhere near my age. However, I have no concerns about them singling me out. We all keep to ourselves. The property I live in is in good shape but unfortunately I can't say that about many other properties on my street, so really I don't see why my neighbors would want to single me out.

NoDFL - To clear things up - I am a nursing student at RIVERLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE. This college has many other medical degrees such as radiography, pharmacy tech, surgical tech, etc. You could have found that information on the schools website.

Also, I am a renter in Albert Lea. I have a great landlord. Finding this place was very difficult. My husband and I are not from this area - and when we toured apartments, we were horrified at what we encountered. I lived in Winona, a college town, and the rental property there is in much better shape than what is here in Albert Lea.

I don't want my rent to be raised, so I do not support this ordinance. Renters have the right to choose where they live. My husband and I turned down many place. The landlords should have enough sense to keep their property in decent condition. It seems the best properties in this town are income based, which does not work well for people with an income.
