SHAKOPEE — According to coach Kent Viesselman, the United South Central boys’ track and field team added the Shakopee Invitational to the schedule in order to test the Rebels’ top individuals against some Class AA competition.
They came through nicely. And so did a number of other people.
The Rebels turned in their best performance of the indoor season, winning Thursday’s Shakopee Invitational with 143.5 points. In second place was Hutchinson with 100 points, followed by Shakopee with 84, Waseca 51.5, Montgomery-Lonsdale 46, and Chaska nine.
&uot;It was really a good meet for us,&uot; said Viesselman. &uot;We originally added it to the schedule because we wanted to run against some good Class AA teams early in the season, to test our top kids. We got that done, but I think some of our younger, less-experienced kids came of age too. We saw some outstanding performances from our first-year athletes.&uot;
The Rebels showed outstanding balance and depth, placing in every event and placing first in seven of the 14 events.
John Jacobs got things off to a good start, winning the high hurdles, and Josh Schoen led the way in the 1600 meters.
Tony Schumann won all 3 individual events he competed in – the 55 dash, the 160 and the triple jump. Schumann’s performance in the 160 was a new USC indoor record.
Jeremy Kuster led the way in the 400. Joe Schultz and Cam Evjen went 1-2 in the 800.
The 4×400 relay team of Jacobs, Tim Mutschler, Schumann and Schoen picked up the other first, winning that event in an outstanding time of 3:41.1.
The Rebels open their outdoor season Tuesday with the Rebel Relays.
