Among the new events at this year’s Freeborn County Fair is the Open Goat Dairy Show. Sanctioned by the American Dairy Goat Association, the show is next Sunday at 8 a.m. in the swine building showing arena. About 200 goats are expected in the show.
&uot;The Open Dairy Goat show is new to the Freeborn County Fair because we added Sunday to the fair,&uot; said show superintendent Cheryl Lonning. &uot;It’s a nice chance for people to see a lot of different goats and quality goats.&uot;
Because it’s sanctioned, contestants can enter a number of animals in each division to compete for champion. In all sanctioned divisions, the animals must be registered by the ADGA.
Classes are sanctioned for Alpine, Nubian, LaMachas Oberbasli, Saanen, Toggenburg and Recorded Grades for other breeds. There’s also both junior and senior doe shows.
&uot;Each breed will go against each other at the end for the champion in the show,&uot; Lonning said. &uot;We’re still getting entries. We’ve had people from as far as Harris, Minn. inquire about the show as well as area herds.&uot;
&uot;To help sponsor it, we’re having a raffle with items donated from area businesses,&uot; she said.
The raffle is set for Saturday and Sunday with a table set up by the baby animal show.
