It is a message worth repeating: The tax rebates were the right thing for the state to do.

And they’re nearly on the way.

The first rebate checks will be mailed Aug. 23 and taxpayers should see them in their mailboxes within the same week.

That’s good news for families gearing up for the start of school.

It’s also good news for parents with tuition bills for their college-age children.

It’s good news for those struggling to save for retirement.

And it’s good news for younger families saving a down payment for their first home.

And so forth.

Simply put, it is great to see state government riding a wave of economic prosperity and giving back tax money that is not needed in the current budget.

We look forward to seeing local families enjoying a little extra money to do with as they will.
