MINNEAPOLIS – It wasn’t storybook ending for Naomi Gregerson’s season.
It was also far from an unhappy one.
Gregerson, an Albert Lea High School sophomore, claimed a pair of medals in the Class A state girls’ swimming and diving meet that concluded Wednesday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Although it wasn’t as impressive as last year, when Gregerson won a gold and silver medal at state, this year’s performance was nonetheless noteworthy.
Gregerson brought home another silver, placing second in the 100-yard freestyle – the same as a year ago. She finished in 53.65 seconds, behind Emily Mondloh of Fridley who clocked 53.08.
In the 50 free, the event Gregerson won in last year’s state meet, she finished sixth in 24.64 seconds. Samantha Dyshaw of Montevideo/Yellow Medicine East won it in 24.22.
Gregerson got to state by winning in the Section 1A championships in the 50 and 100 free in 24.93 and 54.23, respectively – both section records.
Gregerson’s performance gave Albert Lea 30 points in the state meet, good for a tie for 23rd place in the team standings. Rosemount won with 193, followed in the top five by Section 1A champ Northfield at 163, Sartell-St. Stephen 152, Benilde-St. Margaret’s 136 and Montevideo/Yellow Medicine East 129. The top Big Nine school was Mankato West, which tied for 18th place with 44 points.
