NASHUA, Iowa – There aren’t many wrestling tournaments the Lake Mills Bulldogs don’t like these days, but they have to be particularly fond of the Nashua-Plainfield Invitational.

The Bulldogs won the championship for the third year in a row Saturday, topping a nine-team field with 189.5 points. North Iowa Conference rival N-K/NC was third with 156.

The Bulldogs took the title despite filling only 11 of 13 weight classes, placing fifth or better at every position.

Three wrestlers won championships for Lake Mills. Jason Sprecher took the title at 103 pounds, Chris Helgeson was first at 119 and David Back claimed the crown at 125.

Also making the finals and placing second were Derek Rosen, 112; Matt Fjeld, 189; and Alex Rice, heavyweight.

Brad Helgeson was third at 135, as was Andy Gregor at 171. Matt Hatland was fourth at 140, Michael Flugum fourth at 160 and Jason Brekken fifth at 152.

Three Lake Mills wrestlers are included in the individual state rankings. Chris Helgeson is first at 135, Sprecher third at 119 and Brad Helgeson fourth at 135.

The Bulldogs, currently rated No. 1 in Iowa’s traditional Class A state rankings, have a dual-meet record of 2-0. They have a home triangular tonight against Belmond-Klemme and Alden.
