Espe is filling in for members of the school staff who have been given some time off as a unique twist to this year’s fund drive.

Teachers and staff who participated each donated a dollar. Their names were placed in a hat and seven names were drawn. Those whose names were selected were given time off while Espe filled in, the principal said.

As a result, the Espe could be seen doing janitorial work, teaching classes and serving lunch, while still doing his routine duties.

Southwest staff raised $250 for the Salvation Army this year, Espe said.

Students and staff are also collecting nonperishable food items for the Salvation Army this year.

Their goal is to collect over 1,800 pounds, Espe said. The Salvation Army will collect the food and money donations later, and distribute them to needy families this Christmas.
