He saw Thursday’s 4-3 setback to Mankato East as a building block for the Tigers, who haven’t won a dual meet since 1998.

&uot;I was very proud of how we played today,&uot; said Kalis, whose team fell to 0-2 in the Big Nine and 0-3 overall. &uot;We played some great tennis. It was fun to watch. We know we can compete with them. It’s something we can build on.&uot;

It was also something they could have won, according to Kalis. A couple three-set singles losses prevented it.

&uot;Everyone played well,&uot; said Kalis. &uot;We had a couple three-setters that could have gone either way. I’m very proud of the team.&uot;

The Tigers’ wins were all at doubles, all in straight sets.

Karl Bohrnstedt and Matt Wulff triumphed 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, Kurtis Bohrnstedt and John Mattson won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, and Steve Thorn and Leo Silva prevailed 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3.

The Tigers gave the Cougars all they could handle in the top two singles spots.

At No. 1, Eric Trygstad won the first set 6-4 but lost the next two, 6-3 and 6-1. Matt Entorf also won his opener at No. 2 by a 6-4 score but went on to fell 6-1, 7-5.

&uot;Matt’s match lasted about two and a half hours,&uot; said Kalis. &uot;It was just a great match.&uot;

Brandon Quam was defeated 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles while Dan Jones lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4.

The Tigers have another home Big Nine meet today, facing Faribault at 4:30 at the Southwest courts.
