With summer getting into full – albeit cool and rainy – swing, area boaters need to make a mental note: Put on those life jackets. State law requires a flotation device for every one aboard any kind of watercraft, and it’s a law that is usually obeyed. But all too often the life jackets and cushions are tucked away in lockers or under seats where they are virtually useless.

No one who goes out on a boat expects an accident or upset. But when the unexpected happens, there is little time to dig around for a life jacket. That is particularly true for boats with children aboard; when a boat overturns or is involved in an accident there is simply not time for adults to help children into their life jackets and still put on their own. The result is usually tragedy.

The best policy is to wear a life jacket at all times. At a minimum, keep a floatation device close at hand. It’s a small act that could save a life.
