ALDEN – It’s an urge Lori Nelson hasn’t had for many years, since her single days.
So she called up several of her old friends, most of them also long married. They felt the same way. It was time to play some ball.
Their big bash is set for Friday night at 7:30 at Alden’s North Park softball diamond, part of the Morin Lake Days festivities.
The women, who played for the old Club 90s softball team in the 1980s, will take on the current Alden-Conger High School team in a seven-inning slow-pitch game.
&uot;I was kind of getting the bug to play a little bit,&uot; said Nelson, wife of Alden-Conger softball and football coach Gary Nelson. &uot;With Morin Lake Days coming up, I thought it would be a good time to get together. We’re all still around here.&uot;
Most of the former players are in their 40s, according to Nelson, though a couple are in their 30s.
In addition to Nelson, players expected to participate are Jolene Bute, Janelle VanEnglenburg, Janet Bremseth, Anita Majerus, Kelly Skov, Cindy Mathiason, Janice Bolinger, Val Jensen, Donna Newman, Donna Nelson and Karen Jacobs. Nelson didn’t know the married names of Julie Beck or Julie Monson.
Nelson’s husband is expected to umpire the game or coach the high school team.
Nelson said the Club 90s former coach, Jon Duncan, happily agreed to join the reunion.
And so did the players.
Said Nelson: &uot;Every time I asked someone they’d say, ‘That sounds like fun. I hope I can still run around the bases.’&uot;
