Thousands braved the mosquitoes and lined the streets for the third of July parade and Fourth of July fireworks display during the extended Independence Day celebration in Albert Lea.

During the Albert Lea Jaycees’ July 3 parade, the Albert Lea Good Samaritan Center received overall champion honors. The nursing home also took first place in the non-profit category.

Taking second place in the non-profit category was Vineyard Christian Fellowship. First place in the youth category went to Halverson Pack 7 Cub Scouts. Second place was awarded to the Albert Lea Figure Skating Club.

In the commercial category, the Albert Lea Tribune got first place. Second place went to Alliant Energy.

The award for overall champion honors is $300. First-place finishes receive $150, and second place, $100.

Chairman Tom Jones said he was very pleased with this year’s parade. &uot;The parade really flowed well, and I was happy with how long it took. Last year when we finished, it was getting dark.&uot;

Everyone’s efforts made it a parade well worth seeing. &uot;I was very pleased with the wide variety of floats and the efforts people put into making them,&uot; Jones said. &uot;I’ve received many favorable comments.

&uot;For the most part, kids were great, well-behaved, and people picked up after themselves,&uot; he added.
