On any other night, it could have been a victory for the Albert Lea American Legion baseball team.
But not on this night.
Post 56 lost 5-1 to arch rival Austin at Hayek Field Thursday night despite outhitting the visitors 7-5.
&uot;It was a well played game by both sides,&uot; said Albert Lea coach Dell Dooley. &uot;They just got the timely hits and we didn’t.&uot;
It was close most of the night.
Trailing 2-0, Albert Lea got its lone run in the third when David Dahl and Phil Wacholz singled and Dahl eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Austin added a run in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Dahl went 2-for-4 to lead Albert Lea. Wacholz, Isaac Walton, Adam Hamberg, Jay Link and Adam Highum added one hit apiece.
Link struck out four and walked four while pitching a complete game. All five Austin runs were earned.
&uot;I thought the boys played a good ballgame,&uot; said Dooley. &uot;The defense was good, we outhit them, Jay pitched pretty decent. It was just one of those games. It wasn’t our night.&uot;
The Legion team, 9-12, hosts Winona in a rescheduled doubleheader at 5:30 tonight at Hayek Field. The Rochester Patriots come to town Saturday for a rescheduled game at noon.
