GRAFTON, Iowa – The two victims of a plane crash Saturday remain unidentified pending confirmation of names and notification of family, said Worth County Sheriff David Gentz.
The crash was reported about 2:15 p.m. by a local woman who spotted the wreckage in a bean field just northeast of Grafton. Authorities have been unable to find a witness to the actual crash.
A thorough search of the field yielded no sign of survivors, Gentz said, adding that the single-engine plane did not appear to be from the area.
Gentz said he called the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board to assist in the investigation. More details about the accident will be released late this afternoon, he said.
A severe thunderstorm with lightning and high winds was passing through the area shortly before the wreckage of the plane was spotted, Gentz said. Investigators do not know if the storm contributed to the crash.
