One of the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City explodes Tuesday morning after a hijacked plane crashed into it. The plane was one of two that crashed into the twin towers around 8 a.m. The buildings later collapsed. As many as 50,000 people work in the buildings, but there have been no estimates on how many died or were injured. Within an hour, another hijacked plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., setting the building on fire. The White House and Capitol were evacuated and President George W. Bush, in a statement, said the acts were the work of terrorists.
