LAKE CRYSTAL – The United South Central Rebels were at their best when it counted the most – at the beginning and the end.
The Rebels scored on their opening drive, tied it late in the fourth quarter and won in overtime, defeating Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 20-14 in a Gopher Valley Conference football opener Friday night.
&uot;Overall, it was a good start,&uot; said USC coach Brent Schimek. &uot;It’s always good to win an overtime game.&uot;
Trevor Haugh had the key play in overtime, intercepting a pass on LCWM’s second play. Two plays later Jon Beyer scored from 10 yards out.
Haugh finished with 10 tackles and an interception. Chance Kimpton had nine tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.
Noel Johnson led the Rebels in rushing with 83 yards on 19 carries.
