GLENVILLE – It may not have been as efficient or precise as coach Craig Rayman would prefer, but the Glenville-Emmons Wolverines will take it just the same.
&uot;Anytime you beat someone at this time of the season, it’s a big win,&uot; said Rayman. &uot;You can’t take anyone lightly at tournament time.&uot;
Especially not Alden-Conger. Though the Knights had a rebuilding season under first-year coach Jonathan Jahnke, they improved a great deal, and their rivalry with the Wolverines goes way back.
&uot;Alden-Conger has improved a lot,&uot; said Rayman. &uot;It’s a credit to their players and coaching staff.&uot;
The Knights took it to four games before falling 3-1 at Glenville in an opening-round sub-section match Thursday. The Wolverines won 15-6, 15-7, 13-15, 15-5.
The victory advanced the third-seeded Wolverines to the semifinal round Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Rochester Mayo Civic Center, probably against second-seeded Lyle/Austin Pacelli. The season ended for the Knights, seeded sixth out of seven sub-section squads.
Elsewhere in the area, NRHEG reached the Class 2AA East Sub-section semifinals with a 3-1 triumph over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, 15-11, 15-9, 3-15, 15-5. United South Central’s season ended with a 15-4, 15-4, 15-5 loss to Belle Plaine.
Glenville-Emmons served up seven aces Thursday, converting 91 of 100 at the line.
&uot;Overall, we missed a few too many serves,&uot; said Rayman. &uot;At times we hit the ball real well. Other times we didn’t, which may have been because our passing was off to the setter. We’ll need to play a little bit better Saturday at Rochester.&uot;
The Wolverines’ statistical leaders Thursday: Megan Avery, 12-for-13 serving, 15 kills, one tip kill; Alisa Rayman, 24-for-26 serving, two aces, 11 kills, four tips; Emily Wolff, 16-for-16 serving, one ace; Kelly Yost, two kills, one block; Lauren Bremer, 3-for-4 serving; Amy Sola, 2-for-2 serving, four kills, two tips, three blocks; Jenna Brackey, 13-for-14 serving, three aces, 13 assists; Katie Brackey, 17-for-19 serving, one ace, 14 assists.
The Knights graduate just two seniors off this year’s team, Kristen Martinson and Patty Boettcher.
