WINONA – Once the Albert Lea Tigers found their scoring groove, there was no stopping them.

The Tigers broke open a tie game with three goals late in the second period and rolled to a 7-1 victory in a Big Nine Conference girls’ hockey game at Winona Saturday.

Amy Leach put the Tigers on the board early, scoring 3:25 into the first period on an assist from Karissa Lau.

It remained 1-0 until early in the second, when the Winhawks’ Jodi Holland scored unassisted.

Laura Hillman broke the tie with a power-play goal with 4:32 left in the second, assisted by Leach. Jill Woodside scored unassisted less than a minute later and, with 55 seconds left, Hillman made it 4-1 with an unassisted score.

Another power-play score by Hillman, this one assisted by Leach and Tessa Christensen, put the Tigers up 5-1 early in the third. Hillman and Heather Bagley scored late on assists from Christensen and Woodside, respectively.

The Tigers converted two of five power plays while Winona was 0-for-2. Albert Lea outshot Winona 32-16.

Danika Porter was in goal for the Tigers.

The ALHS girls play Tuesday at New Ulm.
