AUSTIN – The season ended Friday night for the Albert Lea High School girls’ swimming and diving team, but coach Jon Schmitz is probably already thinking about next year.

While the Tigers did not advance anyone to state, their contingent of mostly young individuals made an impressive showing with many season bests in the Section 2A finals at Austin’s Ellis Middle School.

Red Wing won the meet with 386 points. The Tigers were eighth out of nine teams with 125, one point behind Mankato East.

Three Tigers placed in two events.

Laura Grund was eighth in the 100-yard freestyle in 57.41 seconds and ninth in the 50 free in 26.24. Brooke Kaasa took 11th in the 200 free in 2:09.6, 12th in the 500 free in 5:54.32. Chelsea Cole was 12th in the 200 free in 2:12.19, 13th in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.77.

The best Albert Lea relay was the 400 freestyle, which placed fifth in 3:54.75. The Tigers were seventh in the 200 freestyle relay. The 200 medley was disqualified in the preliminaries.
