The street decorations are out, Christmas trees are going up, and print and broadcast advertisements are beckoning shoppers to take part in the biggest shopping season of the year.
This year, more than in recent years, the importance of doing that shopping locally as much as possible is magnified by an economic slide. Many retail businesses depend on the Christmas season to keep them afloat year-round, and the stakes are rarely higher than they are this year.
It’s important to Albert Lea to have a strong retail sector that includes a good balance of malls, downtown shops, big-box stores and other shops. Those who fret over the future of the town can do their part to help ensure it by putting their dollars into the local economy.
Some would say otherwise, but the truth is that Albert Lea has a wide array of shopping options. From clothes to electronics to books to toys, it’s all available here. Residents of other towns in the area also have chances to support their local economy.
This year, the best Christmas gift we can give to our hometown is to stay put for our shopping.
