MANKATO – Twice, the Albert Lea High School wresters found themselves trailing a team they to figured to beat. Both times they turned it around.
The Tigers defeated Mankato East 41-21 and topped St. Peter 43-26 in a triangular at Mankato Thursday night, improving to 5-1 in the Big Nine and 11-5 overall in dual meets.
According to coach Larry Goodnature, the Tigers looked a little sluggish after weighing in and then wrestling at 5:30.
&uot;We came out flat and, starting at 152 (pounds), it kind of played right into their hands because East is strong at the upper weights,&uot; said Goodnature. &uot;And East is a strong team in the conference; they beat Austin 45-24 the other night. But we dug in and were able to take them in their gym.&uot;
The Tigers dropped three of the first five bouts against East. Dustin Eggum won by fall at 152 and Adam Lares pinned his man at 189, but Brandon Servantez lost by fall at 160, Justin Krueger was upset 4-2 at 171 and heavyweight Chris Hable was pinned. It left East with a 15-12 lead.
Josh Hansen got the Tigers rolling with a fall at 103 and a pair of youngsters followed with big wins. Taylor Ignaszewski, a seventh-grader, won 4-1 at 112 while eighth-grader Nate Goodnature won by fall at 119.
After Brandon Klukow lost 6-2 at 125, Neal Underdahl won by fall, Adam Elseth got a forfeit and Adam Morreim got a 9-2 victory. Nate Loberg lost 12-3 at 145.
The Tigers were behind 20-16 after the 103-pound match against St. Peter but turned it around with six consecutive victories that included three falls in a row.
The results against St. Peter: 152, Eggum lost by fall; 160, Krueger won by fall; 171, Derek Goodnature lost by fall; 189, Lares lost 15-6; heavyweight, Chris Hable won by fall; 103, Zach Hansen lost 14-2; 112, Josh Hansen won 10-2; 119, Nate Goodnature won 26-11 tech fall; 125, Klukow won 11-2; 130, Underdahl won by fall; 135, Elseth won by fall; 140, Morreim won by fall; 145, Loberg lost by fall.
Elseth remain undefeated for the season. Josh Hansen has only one loss.
The Albert Lea junior varsity beat Mankato East 54-9 and St. Peter 65-6.
The Tigers compete next Thursday with a home dual meet against Austin.
