It’s in the best interest of Albert Lea for the city council to find a way to allow a proposed Fountain Lake boat rental business to become a reality.

The entrepreneur, David Berg, at first asked to operate the business out of his home. When neighbors objected because the area is not zoned for business, the council balked. Berg now has asked if he can operate the business from city land, only storing the boats at his property. The city promised to check on the idea and get back to him.

There seems little doubt that a boat rental operation, even a small one like the one that is proposed, would provide a nice source of recreation for Albert Lea residents and visitors alike. Our lakes are among the city’s best assets, and finding ways to make them more accessible is a key to maximizing the city’s potential as a recreation destination.

It’s our hope that the city seriously considers any possible way of allowing the business to operate.
