Now, she says, the Wolverines also know it.

The Glenville-Emmons girls’ stunned Southwest Conference co-leader Southland 42-40 at Glenville Tuesday night.

&uot;This is just a huge win for the girls, a confidence booster,&uot; said Ziebell. &uot;They needed something like this to prove to themselves they could play ball.&uot;

The Wolverines, 8-6 overall, improved to 5-2 in conference play while the Rebels fell to 5-1. Lyle/Austin Pacelli, which has yet to play Southland, is the only remaining unbeaten team in the conference.

After a 12-12 tie at the end of the first quarter, the Wolverines opened up Tuesday’s game to 29-21 at halftime. They missed 18 of their first 19 shots in the third period but still took a 31-26 advantage into the fourth.

The difference, according to Ziebell, was free throws and defense. The Wolverines were 10-for-13 at the line to the Rebels’ 5-for-13. Glenville-Emmons had 32 rebounds and 16 turnovers.

&uot;Offensively, things weren’t falling for us,&uot; said Ziebell, whose team was 15-for-53 from the field. &uot;Our defense kept us in it. As a team, it was our best defensive game of the season.&uot;

Katie Brackey scored a team-high 14 points for the Wolverines. Alisa Rayman had eight points, six rebounds and three steals, Kelly Yost six points and 12 rebounds. Jenna Brackey had nine points, including two three-pointers, and five assists.

The Wolverines host Mabel-Canton Friday.
