INVER GROVE HEIGHTS – All things considered, coach Paul Cyr felt seventh place was not a bad showing for the NRHEG wrestling team in Saturday’s Simley Invitational.
What you have to consider is the Panthers started seven freshmen and forfeited three weights in a traditionally tough tournament.
&uot;I felt we were much more competitive than we have been so far this season,&uot; said Cyr. &uot;We have seen some marked improvement since the beginning of the season with the majority of our young people.&uot;
Simley won the tournament with 203 points. Anoka was second with 170, followed by Champlin Park with 122, Morris Area 100, Minneapolis Edison 87.5, Mahnomen-Waubun 69, NRHEG 62 and Chisago Lakes 32.
The Panthers’ top individual finish was third, by Cody Christensen at 103 pounds and Patrick Petsinger at 189.
&uot;Those two had an excellent day for us,&uot; said Cyr.
James Petsinger placed fourth at 275.
Other NRHEG places: Anders Mattson, fifth, 140; Nick Christensen, fifth, 145; Kaleb Jacobson, fifth, 160; Dave Halbakken, sixth, 130; Matt Holland, sixth, 152.
Also wrestling but not placing were Brian Bos, 112; and Bill Root, 171.
The Panthers wrestle Thursday at St. Clair.
