ROCHESTER – Still in the hunt.
A couple months ago, you wouldn’t have expected to hear those words from Albert Lea boys’ hockey coach Roy Nystrom at this point of the season. At least not about his squad. But he was Saturday night.
The surprising Tigers continued to shock the Big Nine with a 5-2 victory over Rochester John Marshall at the Rochester Recreation Center, keeping them in contention for the conference crown.
It may also have been a history-making win.
&uot;This could be the first time Albert Lea has swept JM (in boys’ hockey), ever,&uot; said Nystrom. &uot;Maybe it’s happened in the past, but I can’t remember it ever happening. We’re 7-3 in the conference and still in the hunt.&uot;
Defenseman Josh Tubbs helped get the Tigers off to a strong start Saturday, scoring the first two goals on assists by Adam Boelter and Tony Dugstad, respectively. Matt Bracker made it 3-0 on an assist from Matt Dugstad.
The Rockets scored the lone second-period goal.
Boelter put Albert Lea up 4-1 as Matt Petersen assisted. Josh Tubbs got his hat-trick goal on an assist from his twin brother Matt, the Tigers’ goalie.
Albert Lea outshot John Marshall 31-18. The Tigers had one penalty, the Rockets three.
&uot;The boys played a very good game today,&uot; said Nystrom. &uot;The whole team played well.&uot;
The Tigers host Faribault in a Big Nine game Tuesday at 7:30 at the City Arena.
