A freight train crashed into a trailer at a railroad crossing on South Broadway near 7th Street around 11 a.m. Saturday, injuring two and blocking traffic for hours.
According to the Albert Lea Police Department, the trailer went into the crossing from the west side. The driver said that he did not see the crossing light was on.
The Union Pacific northbound train hit the trailer in the middle, and the front platform was pushed out to the east, hitting a car stopped for the train on the opposite side of the tracks. Two people in the car were taken to a hospital. The trailer driver also had a slight injury.
The trailer belongs to Hawkeye Food Service Distribution. Cooking materials were scattered around the crash scene. The train of more than 50 freighters blocked two crossings on South Broadway and Margaretha Avenue for hours and the traffic in the area was confused.
